Edit your HPD-20 kits on a computer
A free, browser-based kit editor for the HPD-20 HandSonic. Change instruments, layers, tuning, effects and kit names on a full-size screen instead of the HPD-20's small display, then load the result back onto your HPD-20. Nothing to install, and your files never leave your computer.
- Save a backup. On the HPD-20, put a USB stick in the USB MEMORY port and choose MENU → SYS → USB Memory → Save Backup.
- Edit it here. Plug the stick into your computer and open the file from its Roland/HPD-20/Backup folder (it's named like BKUP-001.HS0). Make your changes.
- Load it back. Download the edited backup, copy it into that same folder on the stick, then on the HPD-20 choose MENU → SYS → USB Memory → Load Backup.
What you can edit
- All 200 kits: name and subtitle
- Every pad (M1–M5, S1–S8, D-BEAM, external pad, hi-hat pedal), both layers A and B

- Layer mode and fade point, ambience send, multi-effect assignment
- Kit ambience type and the three multi-effects, including their knobs
Good to know
- Keep your original backup. Loading a backup replaces everything on the HPD-20, so the original is your undo.
- Edits are saved under a new backup number you choose, so existing backups aren't overwritten.
- Works in any modern desktop browser. The Live tab (play pads and switch kits over USB) needs Chrome or Edge and Roland's HPD-20 driver.
- Tested with HPD-20 firmware 1.03. User samples (U001 and up) and a few effect types' knobs can't be edited yet.
Kit effects: Ambience picks the room; MFX1–3 pick the kit's three multi-effects (choosing a type loads that type's standard settings), and each pad layer's MFX column chooses which one it goes through. Each pad has two layers: A is the main sound, B can be layered on top (set B to OFF for none). The Layer setting under each pad decides how B plays: OFF (A only), MIX (always both), VELO MIX/VELO FADE (B added on harder hits), VELO SW (A on soft hits, B on hard ones); Fade Point is the strike force where B comes in. Type part of an instrument name or its number and pick from the list. Volume and muffling run 0–100; tuning is in cents (100 = one semitone), −2400 to +2400; sweep −100 to +100; color −50 to +50; pan −15 (L15) to +15 (R15), 0 = center; Amb is the ambience send (0–100); MFX picks which multi-effect the layer goes through.
